Jigsaw Learning is proud to announce an expanded partnership with the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) to further enhance the implementation of Collaborative Response across the school system. This partnership, through a multi-layered support plan, will focus on deepening collaborative practices and ensuring sustainable success.
Key areas of support include:
- Onboarding Resources: Leaders and staff will have access to resources to support the integration of Collaborative Response for new staff members.
- Support for First Year Schools: Continued guidance will be provided to the Spring 2024 cohort of school leaders to ensure a strong foundation in Collaborative Response.
- Sustainability for Educational Directors: Ongoing support for Ed Directors will focus on maintaining Collaborative Response practices across all schools.
- Formative Feedback for Area Directors: Area Directors will employ tools such as the School Collaborative Response Formative Feedback and Collaborative Team Meeting Feedback to strengthen implementation and guide Ed Directors in this work.
- Resource Development: New support resources will be created, aligned with focus areas identified through the CBE School Self-Assessment Tool.
This initiative underscores CBE’s commitment to fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement in its schools.
“We are excited to deepen our partnership with the Calgary Board of Education, working together to expand and sustain Collaborative Response practices across the system," said Kurtis Hewson, Lead Learner and Co-Founder of Jigsaw Learning. "Through this multi-layered support plan, we aim to provide leaders and staff with the resources and tools they need to foster a culture of collaboration, ensuring that schools are well-equipped to meet the diverse needs of their students. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to continuous improvement and long-term success in education."
“Our work with Jigsaw Learning over the past several years has expanded into a systematic, system-wide approach to integrating collaborative response processes and structures into each of our school’s planned meetings. Working with Kurtis and Lorna, system leaders and our Superintendents has supported us in developing an approach that has brought 251 schools into this work in a thoughtful and sustainable way. I have heard repeatedly from principals that as they have provided guidance and opportunities for their staff to think about and take up this work in this way, their staff have realized the effectiveness of this approach and seen the impact on improved student learning. As our schools continue to experience both growth and increased student complexities, Collaborative Response has provided an effective way to leverage and develop teacher expertise on each staff for the benefit of all their students.”
- David Dyck, Education Director, Area 7 | Well-Being
For the past four years, our team has worked with the Calgary Board of Education to implement and refine Collaborative Response across the system. This support has engaged divisional staff at all levels, including several divisional days dedicated specifically to understanding and sustaining Collaborative Response for all staff in the organization.

The Calgary Board of Education is the largest school district in Western Canada, educating more than 143,000 students in over 250 schools. To manage the needs of this large school system and efficiently support their schools, the CBE has divided their school district into seven administrative areas in Calgary. Each area is led by two Education Directors who provide leadership support to principals in 17-20 schools, and each Education Director has a central portfolio which extends K-12 across all schools (e.g. Early Learning, Core Curriculum, Well-Being, etc.).
